Lot Essay

The present bronze reveals the influence of Charles-Henri-Joseph Cordier, the celebrated ethnographic sculptor who specialised in Mediterranean peoples from Greece to Africa. This figure, on the other hand, is a study of a different racial type. It is a fascinating study of an Aborigine maiden and an example of bronze in which patination, chiselling and texture are exquisitely worked; particularly in the chasing on the skin and hair, and on the duck-billed platypus. Moreover, the attention to surface effect combines with skill and imagination in designing the sculpture. The final whole is an original and graceful study of the female nude and also a realistic portrait of the Australian native, fauna and flora.
