The original version of this group was an antiquity, which was restored by Cellini under the orders of Cosimo I de'Medici in 1548.

Ganymede's outstanding beauty caused Jupiter to fall in love with him. The god transformed himself into an eagle and carried Ganymede off to Mount Olympus, where he became Jupiter's cup-bearer.
