A gift from the artist to Alfred Kern as a mark of his gratitude for the loan of the house at Choisy, Switzerland in 1946.
Churchill painted several versions of this still life composition, (D.Coombes, Churchill his Paintings, London 1967, p.144, no. 169) other versions show a different selection of fruit but the tray and draped cloth background remain the same. The silver tray was part of the collection of silver at Chartwell where the work was painted between 1934 and 1935
