The present picture derives from the painting by Canaletto at Woburn Abbey (W. G. Constable, Canaletto, 1962, no.287 and pl.56),
which forms part of the series of twenty-two views and two larger festival subjects purchased by the fourth Duke of Bedford between
1733 and 1736.
The Cavendish-Bentinck collection predominated in Venetian and Veronese pictures, including large numbers of paintings by Tintoretto, Veronese, Pietro Longhi, G. B. Tiepolo, Canaletto and Guardi, many of which had been acquired in the Veneto (see, for instance, the picture sold in these Rooms, 14 Dec.1990, lot 49, and the Guardi sold at Christie's, New York, 11 Jan.1991, lot 86)
