Lot Essay

These pictures are most probably part of a set of Foreign and Domestick Birds by Dixon advertised in Faulkener's Dublin Journal on 9 September 1755 in which the set was said to be ready for distribution to subscribers. Each one of the set of twelve is dedicated to a particular noblewoman and each is derived from plates in Edwards' Natural History of Uncommon Birds, published 1743-51
