Although bearing the signature of Canova, the present relief is closer in style to Thorwaldsen and his studio. In 1812, Thorwaldsen was commissioned by Raffaele Sterni to produce a frieze for the Quirinale Palace of the Triumphal Entry of Alexander into Babylon. This was supposed to be an allegory of the entry of Napoleon into Rome (op. cit. pp. 81-83, no. 47). Although Thorwaldsen did not produce this commission in marble, his plaster models were much admired by his contemporaries. Once the situation in Europe had stablised enough for the Grand Tourists to return to Rome, he received two commissions to execute various scenes from the plaster frieze in marble. Other sections of the frieze were reproduced in plaster and in marble by the large group of artists living and seeking inspiration in Rome. Two marble reliefs by Thorwaldsen of the Anger of Achilles, and the Legation of Priam, were bought in 1815 by John, 6th Duke of Bedford, and illustrate the artist's virtousity when carving this type of (op. cit. no. 40).
