Major General Charles Bruce, K.C.B., entered the Army, February, 1793, and was appointed Ensign in the 52nd. Foot and Lieut. in the 99th. later that year; Captain 105th. Foot, 1794; Captain 39th. Foot, 1795; served seven years with the 39th. in the West Indies at Surinam and Antigua and was present at the capture of Demerara, Berbice and Essequibo in 1796; Brevet Major, 1803; Major 1805; Brevet Lieut. Colonel, 1810; served in Spain and Portugal and was present in the battles of Vittoria, 21st. June 1813, where he commanded the 1st. Battalion of the 39th. (horse shot under him), Nivelle, Nive and Orthes; during the invasion of France he was wounded in the face at Garris, 15th. Feb. 1814; accompanied the 1st. Battalion to Canada, August, 1814, and returned the following year to command the 2nd. Battalion; Lieut. Colonel, 1815, (C.B.),and placed on half-pay later that year; Lieut. Colonel full-pay 69th. Foot, 1821 (K.C.B.); Major General Bruce died in 1832.
