INDENTColonel William Samuel Burrell, born 1854, entered the Royal West Surrey Regiment as Lieutenant, 1875; Captain 1885, Major 1894; served in the South African War, 1899-1901 and was present at the relief of Ladysmith, the actions at Colenso (where, with half a battalion of the Queen's and some Devons he charged into the village and held it during the epic attempt to save the guns), Spion Kop, Vaal Krantz, the operations on the Tugela and the actions at Pieter's Hill and Laing's Nek; commanded the 2nd Battlion Royal West Surrey Regiment, 21st April to 6th December 1900 and again from 10th June to August 1901 (Mentioned in Sir H.
