MINIATURE BOOK OF HOURS, in English, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM [England, late 19th century]
60 x 41mm (2 3/8 x 1 5/8 inches). 92 leaves, 9 lines, justification: 60 x 40mm, ruled in black, written in a fine gothic script in black ink, rubrics in red and blue, versal and two-line initials in blue with red penwork decoration, two- and three-line illuminated initials in colours on gold ground, 3 FULL-PAGE MINIATURES. Bound in a REPOUSSÉ SILVER BINDING over red morocco by Zaehnsdorf. The upper cover shows four cherub's heads in the corners surrounding a Cross and birds; the lower cover has four cherub's heads around the Instruments of the Passion; spine in three compartments containing two cherub's heads and a lamp, hinged joints, clasp and chain; inner doublures and liners of blue silk; edges gilt.
The manuscript has a calendar of 24 leaves, followed by a short reading from St.John and the "Hours of the blessed Virgin Mary according to the use of England". The Hours of the Cross is between Matins and Lauds; ending on f.90 with a hymn to the Virgin.
