GENOA - Abbe Antonio GIOLFI (1721-1796). [Vedute di Genova. Genoa: 1769 or later].
2° (600 x 710mm). A series of 15 etched views and a panorama of Genoa, the views by Giovanni Lorenzo Guidotti and C. Tessera after Toricelli and Riviera, captions in Italian and French, mostly street scenes, views of the port and the principal churches and palazzos, the panorama by Guidotti after Torricelli comprising 4 double-page views, each made up of two plates (engraved area 515 x 1490mm.), the panorama extending from the River Bisagno to Albaro, and dedicated to Giuseppe D'Oria by Abbe Giolfi. (A few light vertical creases, very light spotting to lower margin). Modern wrappers.
A magnificent and rare collection of views of Genoa published under the auspices of the Genoan artist Abbe Giolfi. The panorama, in particular gives a majestic view of the city and neighbouring coastline. Individual views from this series are rarely seen at auction. Berlin Cat 2720 records a single plate of the Palais Durazzo. The British library map catalogue lists a collection of 19 views of Genoa by Guidotti. Abbe Giolfi was director of the L'Accademia di Pittura e sculptura from 1756-60, and together with Giovanni Ratti were the most important genoan painters of this period. In 1772 Ratti's son, Giuseppe issued the first guide book of Genoa for use of visitors on the Grand Tour. Included with the views are two maps of Genoa:
Giovanni Lorenzo GUIDOTTI. Genoa nel solo giro delle sua mura vecchie con l'esposizione delle Chiesa e luoghi principali. Lucca: [ca. 1760]. Etched plan of Genoa, 490 x 700mm.
Issued before the main series of views, while Guidotti was still working in Lucca, this plan was probably instigated by Giolfi who had a particular interest in the church paintings in Genoa; he painted frescoes in the churches of S.Ambroglio, S.Agostino and S.Maddalena. The British Library catalogue ascribes a date of 1740? to their copy of this plan.
Giuseppe GIRAUD. Nuova delineatione della nobilissima e famosissima Citta di Genova con il molo et muraglie nuove. Genoa: vende in genova da Giuseppe Giraud libraro, 1792. Etched birds-eye view of Genoa on two sheets joined, with letterpress text pasted below, engraved area 350 x 740mm.
A reissue of G.J.de Rossi's plan of Genoa, first issued in Rome in the 1650's.
