Lot Essay

The manufacture of furniture in America from the horns of the Texas longhorn steer follows directly in the tradition of antler furniture made in Europe, particularly in Austria, in the 1830's and 1840's. Wenzel Friedrich (1827-1902) of San Antonio, Texas, was a first generation immigrant from Bohemia and he manufactured these chairs from circa 1880-1890. By the early 1890's longhorn cattle had been superseded by a shorthorn breed less suitable for chair-making. (See: Bruce M. Norman and Alistair Duncan, Fantasy Furniture, New York, 1989, pp. 84-87)
