Lot Essay

A tazza painted by Francesco Durantino and dated 1544 with a rather different treatment of this subject is in the British Museum (MLA 1855, 12-1, 74). There is documentary evidence recording a business arrangement between Francesco Durantino and Guido di Merlino and a dish in Vienna, dated 1543, to support this evidence. A dish with Judith and Holofernes dated 1551 and inscribed ...fato in Botega de guido merlino' is in the Louvre (Inv. OA 1884); see Jeanne Giacomotti, op. cit., no. 1040.
For a detailed discussion concerning this workshop see Johanna Lessman, Italienische Majolika, p. 175 and pls. 150-160 for further examples
