The design of these vases may derive from the Vase de serpentin antique with ram's masks mounts by Gouthière sold from the celebrated collection of the duc d'Aumont in 1782 and bought by Julliot on behalf of Louis XVI. It was illustrated in the Catalogue, pl. 12 and is now in the Louvre.
