Lot Essay
There were three tables of exactly the same form in the Wrightsman Collection (F.J.B. Watson, The Wrightsman Collection, Metropolitan Museum, 1966, vol. II, nos. 154-156); the closest is no. 156 which is not stamped, sold Sotheby's New York, 5 May 1984, lot 198. Watson points out that although tables of this model are sometimes stamped by other ébénistes (i.e. no. 155 with more elaborate marquetry which is stamped by RVLC or the example stamped by Gaspard Feilt, sold Sothebys New York, 31 October 1981, lot 451) the shape, marquetry decoration and mounts all derive from BVRB, who made the seminal examples. It was obviously a successful model and the marchand merciers most probably commissioned other ébénistes to make similar versions.
