The picture, of which this is a later replica, was exhibited at the Royal Academy, 1883, no. 260, and is now in the Manchester City Art Gallery. It was described in the 1925 sale as 'Portia advising Julius Caesar not to go to the Senate' and illustrates lines from Shakespeare's Julius Caesar: 'Yet Caesar shall go forth; for these predictions are to the world in general as to Caesar.' (Act II, Sc. 2)
