The subject is typical of Witherington; compare The Harvest Field, R.A. 1848, no.66, repr. Art Journal, 1859, p.75, or his small sketch of Gleaners in the Tate Gallery (no.1873 iii). The artist exhibited at the R.A. 1811-63, as well as supporting the British Institution and the Society of British Artists. The Hop Garland, 1834, is in Sheepshanks collection in the V. & A.
