Lot Essay

The motif of lion finial and crocodile is found on the superb oliphant that was collected on the Expedition of 1851 against Kosoko of Lagos (see Christie's South Kensington, 12 December 1989, lot 325). The embouchure on the outer edge would indicate Benin influence.
