A SONGYE CIRCULAR STOOL

The support carved as a kneeling female figure with the arms raised and the hands resting on the rim of the seat, the head with squared jaw, the arched brows joined to the broad nose, the coiffure with carved bands of lozenges, the lower back of the head shaved, scarified abdomen and back, prominent sex, dark patina, cracks and chip to base

During the early years of occupation in the Kasai region several expeditions and campaigns were organized to suppress revolts by various tribes in the area, most notoriously the Kiokos. Lekeu took part in a number of such expeditions during the 1890s which took him through the Songye area and it must have been on one of these expeditions that he collected the present stool.
