Lot Essay

Johann Jakob Betzoldt (1621-1707) was a pupil of Leonhard Kern, who is known to have executed several models of children playing 'piggy-back' (cf., no. 111, op.cit.). Betzoldt went on to work closely with Johann Georg Kern, Leonhard's nephew, and produced distinctive ivories representing putti with heavily-lidded eyes in plump faces, loosely curling hair and chubby bodies.
