Lot Essay

A vine-festooned ewer embellished with a bacchic goat mask whose horns are held by a satyr perched on its shoulders and wreathed by the handle was designed by Jacques Stella (d.1657) Premier Peintre to Louis XIII, and engraved by his neice C.B. Stella in her Livre de Vases, 1667. This inspired a model by C.M. Clodion (d.1814) and others by John Flaxman Senior in the 1770's. Two ewers very similar to the present lot are at Kenwood
