Lot Essay
Sarah Samson (1757-1842) of Dover, married Henry Rice of Bramling, near Canterbury. She had three sons, Henry, John (see lots 24 and 25) and Edward (1789-1878). The Rice family was connected by marriage to Jane Austen, whose brother Edward inherited family property and took the name of his second cousin Mr. Knight. His daughter Elizabeth Austen Knight (1767-1852) married Edward Rice, Sarah's youngest son, at Godmersham Park in Kent. Sarah is mentioned frequently in Jane Austen's correspondence, one reference describing her as being a peverse and narrow-minded woman, and she is said to have been the model for Mrs. Norris in Mansfield Park.
