Lot Essay

Lambert, a Parisian artist, painted many depictions of both cats and dogs in oil and watercolour. He studied under Eugène Delacroix and Paul Delaroche and made his debut in the Paris Salon in 1847. He was awarded the Légion d'Honneur in 1874 and won a third class medal at the Exposition Universalle in 1878. He illustrated books about animals including G. de Cherville's 'Les Chiens et les Chats', 1888. Many of his works were engraved and he is represented in a number of French and Dutch Museums and Art Galleries
