Merlin was born and brought up in Audigny although he moved to Paris later on in his career. Like Gustave Surand he studied under the French Master Jean-Paul Laurens. He painted mostly cats with a particular emphasis on kittens. He often used bright colours in his compositions which proved extremely popular with the salon audiences in the late 19th Century. His exhibits often attracted crowds of visitors looking of his latest work.
