Lot Essay

Traditionally identified as a bust of the Emperor Vitellius, the marble head which inspired Tintoretto; probably a portrait of a courtier of the time of the Emperor Hadrian. It was formerly in the Grimani collection in Venice and is now in the Museo Archeologico there. Dr. Rossi dates the artist's studies after this head to the early years of his activity. Numerous workshop versions in the same technique exist
