Lot Essay

In 1734, G.B. Tiepolo undertook the decoration of the Villa Loschi, now Zileri dal Verme at Biron, near Vicenza. The present study is for one of the statues painted on the staircase of the villa. The decorative scheme was allegorical, each statue represented a virtue with the attributes specified in the Iconologia of Cesare Ripa. Seven similar studies are in the Cirico Museum di Trieste and another is in the Victoria and Albert Museum
