Lot Essay

During his youth Géricault drew frequently after the antique. A sketchbook in the Louvre, the Zoubaloff album, dating from 1813-14, is largely of classical subjects.

The present sheet is one of a group of four drawings of the same size and technique, representing mythological scenes; two are in the Musée Bonnat, Bayonne and another, The Procession of Silenus, is in the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris. The verso has a sketch typical of the artist's early work after Les Chevaux de Marly
