The stamp is that of Jean-Joseph de Saint Germain, bronzier and son of the ébaniste Joseph de Saint Germain. He is recorded in the Almanach Général des Marchands in 1749 at the Rue Saint Nicholas, Faubourg Saint-Antoine and was still there in 1722. A number of clock-cases and brackets, mostly of rococo style and stamped ST GERMAIN are recorded, including two in the Getty Museum. Cf. G. Wilson, French Eighteenth Century Clocks in the Getty Museum, 1976, p.45.
