'The Happy Hypocrite' was published in 1896. One of three stories the artist wrote it followed in the tradition of the sophisticated fairytale, used amongst others by his friend, Oscar Wilde. Republished in the same year, it became Beerbohm's most successful literary achievement (See D. Cecil, Max, Cambridge, Mass., 1965, p.148)
