Lot Essay

This carpet appears to have been purchased by Charles Goring (d.1849), after he inherited Wiston Park, Sussex in 1829. The original central bouquet of flowers was subsequently replaced with the Goring family arms, whose motto is They will rise again. The carpet remained with the Goring family until the late 1960's, when it was purchased by the Lansdowne Club for the drawing room.
