INDENTAdmiral Sir John Kingcome, K.C.B., entered the Royal Navy as a Volunteer 2nd. Class in H.M.S. Emerald, 1808; was present at the destruction of the French ships in the Basque Roads, 11th. - 12th. April, 1809 (Clasp Lists P.R.O., ADM 171.2.172); he served variously on the Channel, Irish and Cape of Good Hope Stations as Midshipman until December, 1813; became Master's Mate of H.M.S. St. Lawrence on Lake Ontario, July 1814; nominated Acting Lieutenant, H.M.S. Princess Charlotte, March 1815, an appointment confirmed by the Admiralty in July; after further service on Lake Ontario in H.M.S. Star, he obtained command of the Schooner, H.M.S Confiance on Lake Huron, October 1815; he was again employed on Lake Ontario in the Schooner, H.M.S. Netley, October 1816 to July 1817; after his service on the Canadian lakes he became Senior Lieutenant of H.M.S. Tees, 1822 and later served in the 1st. Burma War, 1824-26; was appointed to the command of H.M.S. Larne, 1824 and joined her in April, 1825; Commander 1828; served in the coastguard from 1835 until June 1837 when he was appointed for the second time to H.M.S. Wellesley on the East India Station; Captain 1838; commanded H.M.S. Belleisle from October, 1841 and was present in China during the concluding operations on the Yang-tse-Kiang (London Gazette 1842 page 3404); commanded H.M.S. Royal William, February 1854 and was present during the operations in the Baltic, 1854-55; Rear Admiral 1857; Commander-in-Chief Pacific, October 1862; Vice-Admiral 1864; (K.C.B., 1865); retired 1866, was advanced to Admiral, 1869 and died two years later
