INDENTM.M. London Gazette 19.4.1945. "Lance Bombardier Edward Thomas Mitchem, Royal Regiment of Artillery: The recommendation states: "On 5 Dec 1943 L/Bdr Mitchem (then Gnr) was acting as OP assistant of a party liasing with 133 Inf Regt U.S. Army. The H.Q. area, in view of enemy O.Ps was subjected to continued shellfire. After one concentration which broke the line both linesmen left to repair it. While out a further concentration came down and it appeared that both men as well as the line were lost. L/Bdr Mitchem awaiting no orders, immediatly went out and under further shellfire mended 5 breaks in the line and located the other two men.
At Tufo from 19 to 22 Jan 44 when with the O.P on Pt 201 which was repeatedly counter attacked, L/Bdr Mitchem displayed great courage. When the O.P was finally overrun he saved the wireless set and thus enabled his Troop Commander to establish a further O.P which was again overrun. His officer being then wounded and captured and the set destroyed he conducted his party to safety through heavy shellfire to our lines.
At Anzio between 16 March and 30 April he again displayed on all occasions cheerful courage under fire".
