Lot Essay

Smyth travelled to Quebec in April 1838 as drawing master to the daughters of John George Lambton, Earl of Durham, Canada's newly appointed Governor General. He returned with them to England in November 1838 and published his Canadian Views in an album of 23 lithographs, Sketches in the Canadas (London 1840)
