Lot Essay

Hacker in his 'impressionist' vein, remote from the French academic style which he used for his formal figure subjects; as the Art Journal observed in 1897, he was 'possessed with a similar spirit to that of Mr Dicksee in endeavouring to avoid the danger of painting in a single groove'. Girls in gardens were a favourite subject for these lighter productions.
