Lot Essay

William Walls was born in Dumfermline, near Edinburgh and studied art at the Royal Scottish Academy Life Schools and at the Antwerp Academy. While in Antwerp in the 1880s he began to draw animals in the Zoological Gardens, a practice which he continued in many other zoos, including London and Hamburg; in 1901 he was elected Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy, becoming a full Academician in 1914
