Views in and around Batavia including the Chinese Camp; the Chinese Tomb at Samarang; the river, Belle Orn, Kotta Batae, views from Batae Toelis and the Palace and Gardens of the Governor General at Buitinzorg including a study of the Gutta Percha tree.

Walter Woodbury first set up a studio in Java in 1857-58 after working as a professional photographer in Australia. In 1859 he returned to London where his photographs were published by Negretti & Zambra, and in 1860 he set up a studio in Batavia where he stayed until 1864, when poor health caused him to return to England. Back in England he patented the Woodburytype process. It is presumed these photographs date from his second stay in Java.
