Lot Essay

Armstrong held his first one-man show at the Leicester Galleries in 1928. Anthony Bertram of the Saturday Review reviewed the exhibition on 21 January 1928 and hailed Armstrong as: 'Triumphantly original ... creating a world ... that is distinctly his ...'. Bertram described Armstrong's 'acrobatic' period in which circus performers in tights combined the attractions of the nude with the attractions of joyous pure colour
