Lot Essay

Oson is one of Hoitsu's art names, 'O' meaning a nightingale and 'son' a village, and was adapted from the name of a place, Uguisumura (The village of the nightingale) in the district of Negishi, Edo, where Hoitsu lived in his retirement. Hillier, p.661-5; Mitchell, p.443; Toda, p.362
