The published Naval General Service Medal rolls confirm John Barnes as an Ordinary Seaman aboard the Onyx for the action of 1.1.1809, one of just five recipients of this clasp on the Admiralty roll. Nine other men with these names are on the roll, three of whom were awarded Medals with single 'Syria' clasps.
For the recapture of the Brig Manly from the Dutch in the North Sea on 1.1.1809, Commander Charles Gill and Lieutenant Edward Garrett both being promoted.
