Chief Petty Officer Samuel James Thornbarrow was born in Sydenham, Kent in June 1880 and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in June 1898. Joining the Ship's Company of H.M.S. Rambler in November 1897, he was advanced to Able Seaman in January 1900 and served off South Africa. Thornbarrow attained Petty Officer status in May 1911 and would appear to have seen service at Port Said in the Great War, in addition to time with Scarab from early 1918 until the end of hostilities. He was awarded his L.S. and G.C. Medal in January 1920 and pensioned as a Chief Petty Officer a few months later.
