Private Charles Cumberland was born in the Parish of Handley, near Blandford in Dorset and attested for the Grenadier Guards at Winchester in October 1833, aged 21 years. A tall man for the age, standing at over six feet, he was discharged at London in June 1856, his only overseas service amounting to four years in Canada.
