M.C. London Gazette 16.8.1917 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During an attack on the enemy's trenches, he showed great promptness and good leadership in capturing two machine-guns which were sweeping our whole front. He also captured many prisoners, and by his determination and resource many casualties were avoided'.

2nd Lieutenant William James Field, M.C., was killed in action in Belgium on 31.7.1917, while serving with the 1st Battalion, Royal Fusiliers. He is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.
