Lot Essay

A very similar Netherlandish copper wine cooler is in the Rijksmuseum (cf. op. cit.). It shares with the present example the elongated gadrooning, and guilloche decoration below the lip, lion mask handles and squared lion paw feet, and consequently suggests a similar origin. A bronze wine cooler of similar form, but with more elaborate decoration and of Venetian manufacture, was sold at Sotheby's, 12 April, 1990, lot 79.
