A LARGE ICON OF THE ANASTASIS

RUSSIAN, SECOND HALF OF THE 16TH CENTURY

Encompassed within an oval mandorla in three shades of blue, Christ stands upon the broken gates of hell, and simultaneously clasps the wrists of Adam and Eve, pulling them from their open tombs, the scene witnessed by the Kings Solomon and David, John the Baptist and the Prophet Samuel, on the left, and a group of Apostles on the right, gilt chains, nails, hammers and locks lie strewn within the black abyss below

Lot Essay

Painted in a style which incorporates features from the painting of both Moscow (the refined introspective facial expressions), and Novgorod (alternating green and red tones). Typical of what Russian historians refer to as 'Mixed Style' found in many of the major workshops in Russia in the 16th Century.
