DAN. QUARE, LONDON: A QUEEN ANNE IVORY DOUBLE-SIDED COLUMN BAROMETER No. 95

The double-sided silvered scales signed on one side Invented and made by D. Quare, London and on the other Faits portatifs par D. Quare à Londres and numbered 95 on the ivory beneath, calibrated in Quare's usual form for 28-31in., each with two blued steel recorders, the giltmetal hood with profuse acanthus engraving, the front edges with wheatear engraving, the swivel suspension bracket and signature box below, three finials to the arched top, the outer two for adjusting the recorders, the slender ivory column of four sections with three brass collars, the lowest with similar acanthus engraving, the four folding giltmetal feet headed with leaves and lion masks against lambrequins and with scroll terminations

This very high quality instrument exhibits the typical characteristics of Quare's ivory column barometers as delineated by Goodison (op.cit.), Goodison also shows clearly how Quare's column barometers are of two differing standards of quality, the present instrument is one of his finest, along with the example in the City of Gloucester Museum and the two in the Royal Collection
