A GEORGE III MAHOGANY BREAKFRONT LIBRARY BOOKCASE, the centre with scrolled pediment outlined with ebony and with ebony dentils, the scroll finials carved with imbrication, the freize with crossgrained fiddleback mahogany mouldings and ebony dentils, the stepped sides with pierced hexagon-pattern galleries and fiddleback friezes, the central door with arched glazing bars centred by pendant bellflowers suspending a foliate C-scroll cartouche, the flanking side doors with similar arched glazing, the angles inlaid in ebony with foliate scrolls, the three doors enclosing three central shelves (two of mahogany-fronted pine, the other of mahogany-fronted oak) and six side shelves, (four of mahogany-fronted oak and two of mahogany-fronted pine), the base with four graduated long drawers outlined with ebony beading, crossbanded and inlaid in broad ebony lines with concave-cornered panels framing roundel arches, the upper fitted with a baize-lined double rachet easel and two side drawers, the right hand divided, mounted with foliate gilt-bronze handles, flanked by oval-inlaid cupboard doors with foliate spandrels, the hinges of the top drawer stamped H. TIBATS, labelled G. JETLEY 24, BRUTON ST. BERKELEY SQ. W1.., minor restoration, the back of the left hand section of the cornice replaced, the cornice with plugged holes for the original finials; with two swagged urn finials inlaid with bands of ebony scrolls, not fitted and not original to the bookcase

Provenance
Acquired before 1958. There is an undated certificate from R.W. Symonds attributing the bookcase to Chippendale.
