Lot Essay

The present medallions are part of the series of portraits Woolner executed in the mid 1850's during his time in Australia. In 1853 Woolner was still in Melbourne, where he had established a rich circle of patrons. He brought back many of the medallions, and it was through these that Woolner gained further recognition as a sensitive and sought-after portraitist.
