Lot Essay

This distinctive model of lion-mask and ring-handle appears on a pair of sideboard urns in the Victoria and Albert Museum (W.38 - 1934, see D. Fitzgerald, Georgian Furniture, H.M.S.O, London, 1969). A pair of similar oval wine coolers with this handle was sold anonymously in these Rooms, 10 October 1985, lot 146. Another was sold by the Executors of the late Mrs J. H. Dent-Brocklehurst, Hawling Manor, Glos., Christie's house sale, 10 October 1988, lot 89.
