A REGENCY MAHOGANY LIBRARY BERGERE with moulded slightly curved rectangular back, the cane-filled back, arms and seat with buttoned red leather-covered squab cushions with later swivelling adjustable reading-slope on turned tapering legs and brass caps, repair to one back leg
Provenance
This chair was previously sold by a member of the MacGregor of MacGregor family, a direct descendant of Admiral Sir Thomas Hardy. A family tradition suggests that Admiral Sir Thomas Hardy had this chair with him on board the H.M.S. Victory during the battle of Trafalgar in 1805.

Lot Essay

This chair relates to the popular early 19th Century 'bergère' form, variants of which were described as 'Ashburnham' in Messrs. Gillows' sketch book of 31 March 1803 (Westminster Public Library, no.1721) and as 'Uxbridge' in their Broughton Hall bills of 1811-13 (see C. Hussey, English Country Houses: Late Georgian, Glasgow, 1958, p.95, fig. 166)
