Lot Essay

Sargent's third and final visit to Spain took place in the autumn of 1912. He visited Granada and Aranjuez accompanied by his sister Emily and the von Glehns. Of Aranjuez, a town some thirty miles south of Madrid, he wrote: 'This place is perfectly charming, grand gardens with cavernous avenues and fountains and statues long neglected - good natured friendly people - lunch in the open air under arbours of roses'
