Sold with the certificate of Albert F. Moglie dated 11 June 1954, the insurance valuation of Jacques Francais dated 13 January 1975 and a letter of David Lloyd Kreeger to Herman Weinberg dated 18 April 1957 referring to certificates from Hills and "five or six other experts" which accompanied the instrument but are no longer extant.

Lot Essay

This instrument was played by Pinchas Zukerman between 1968 and 1972.
It was also loaned to Daniel Heifitz in 1976. According to Doring (op. cit.), the violin was owned by Dr Schreiber in St Petersburg circa 1870. At this time it was played by Wieniawski at the Russian court. About the turn of the century Oswald Möckel sold the instrument to Dr Louis Ravené of Berlin during whose ownership Huberman performed on the violin. Hans Basserman acquired the instrument in 1937 and soon after emigrated to the United States.
